Over the past 10 years or
so the impact of output mediums have changed dramatically, which for us means
that the design and creation of the graphic images are becoming a whole lot
better for us to use. A great example to use is the evolving of televisions,
going back around 10-15 years ago, televisions were bulky, stressful without
any colors apart from black and white. Even the projection has changed
massively as with the newer LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) types of televisions,
which are lighter, graphics between the two is very much different, as the LCD televisions
project a much clearer display overall due to the Liquid Crystals which is
displaying the image to us to watch but also the inclusion of HD (High
Definition) has made a huge difference.
Mobile Phones
The evolution of Mobile
Phones is a great way to explain how the design and creation of the new
technology has changed. Nowadays mobile phones are part of our everyday lives,
and are used by the majority of the population in the world, from teenagers to
the older generation. The only difference is has the years have gone by, mobile
phones we see now are nothing like the phones we would have seen back then, and
when the older generation comes across the new technology, they somewhat become
confused. The same with the younger generation, when they come across something
old, they really do not bother as its useless and not much fun.
In 1983, one of the first
mobile phones was invented; from then to now there has been a massive change
from an old fashioned outdated mobile phone, most commonly known as a ‘Brick’,
to something that is part of our day to day life’s, with graphics at the
highest quality, images at a very high resolution, being able to capture videos
and pictures in HD, Portable without any antennas to receive signal/network, it
simply makes our life’s a whole lot easier.
"In 40 years we've moved rapidly from the mobile phone as a
businessman's tool, through consumerisation and internet access to everything
being connected," Dr Mike Short CBE, former president of the Institute of
Engineering and Technology and Vice President of Telefonica Europe, (From BBC
Website)
The mobile phones back
then, were hardly impressive; they were very big in size, nothing we can
imagine nowadays. They also had a long antenna attached to the phone which
would be needed to be pulled up in order to call somebody. Also another
unimpressive feature was that it most, did not have a screen apart from
numbers. There were no graphic images to see, the design was simple and no
features within the actual phone, apart from calling.
Now, over the years we can see a big transformation. We actually now have phones that are able to fit in our pockets comfortably, with features that will amazing and are now part of our day to day lives. A main, popular feature within all phones in the last 10 years that have is a Camera. A built in Camera is taking graphics and media to a whole new level, as users are now able to capture anything they want at any time. The newer phones have the ability to capture pictures in HD, due to the high mega-pixel camera built in a mobile phone. The pictures that are captured are crisp, clear and colours shown brighter and more adventurous. Many other features that have been added to the latest phones are being able to listen to music, send MMS messages (Picture messaging), instant messaging, watch videos, surf the web and even the ability to play and download games. Another major difference between the rather boring old technology phones and the latest, eye-catching mobile phones is the accessibility to meet users demands. What I mean by this is, that if the user is colour blind, short eye-sighted etc. Within the phones nowadays you can simply adjust the settings to suit your needs, editing the colour of the contrast and brightness of the screen, inverting between different colours on the screen and even able to change the language to any language from a list of many common languages used around the world from English to Greek. As you can most possibly picture how quick the evolving of the design and creation of technology as changed.
The evolving of the design and creation of graphic images in Mobile Phones has made a huge impact on us dramatically. Going back a few years ago telephones were installed in every home for decades people were tied to the telephone. Now with the introduction of mobile phones, it goes everywhere with the user. It has got to a point that if you haven't got a mobile phone, the person your next to or with, you can bet they have one on them. The mobile phones have become ingrained into our daily lives. Cell phones today are almost like miniature computers, meaning you can do just about ANYTHING.
Monitors
Monitors are another output medium that has changed dramatically over the years. The very first monitors were hardly the greatest pieces of technology built, The CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors had problems which the users were not aware of. They were somewhat ugly looking, heavy, fat and took up a lot of room. Some of the problems that were caused were they use to cause the eyes some distress after looking at the screen for a certain period of time, also the monitors would let of poisonous gases when left on for a long period of time. The graphic sides of these monitors are very poor, it simply done does its job, displaying on screen but pixels were not sharp compared to the latest monitors.
The video below simply demonstrates how the CRT works
Nowadays
the most common monitor that you would see or buy is going to be LCD (Liquid
Crystal Display). These are not only stylish but also powerful, and it ensures
that the quality displayed is at a high resolution due to the impact of the
pixels. The LCD monitors are nicely
designed and flat screened, this means there is no more ‘breaking backs’ when
carrying it, they have also reduced a lot in size. Another popular monitor
introduced is LED (Light-emitting Diode). They are similar however the way in
which the picture is projected is different, but quality and graphics are sharp
with a high resolution many built in HD. Also a major benefit of the latest
monitors is that they save a lot of energy. They can come in many sizes, depending on
which one the buyer is looking for.
The evolving of the design and creation of graphic images in Monitors has come along way. Going back to when CRT televisions were bulky, unreliable and not displaying the best quality, graphic wise. To now when you can watch television crystal clear in High Definition and even 3D. You can be sitting at home, and visualising yourself sitting at the football stadium, imagining yourself in a movie. You can clearly see how technology has changed dramatically in a short period of time. I believe personally that there hasn't been much of a impact on the public, as most people do not take notice of the improvements. I think that the gamers who play on game consoles e.g. PlayStation & XBOX, it would impact them positively, as the graphic performance has become a whole lot better, clearer and sharper due to the built in HD accessibility. They would most definitely have their money's worth.
Printer
The
very first printers, like every other old technology item was slow, bulky and frustrating
at times. They were manually used, meaning that everything had to be done manually
by the user, which is very time consuming but a few years down the line
printers were printing automatically by steam, which was a better method but
was again very slow. However, then over the years technology advanced and
reached a point when Laser Jet printers were invented which uses laser beams to
print at a rapid speed and a high quality of text or images. They are a whole
lot faster, but the downfall is the price has increased. Other feature which
makes a huge difference is that they have now enabled users to connect to
devices e.g. iPhone’s via Bluetooth and print an image directly from the phone
itself within a few clicks. Also it allows them to connect to other computers
or laptops, that are a distance away without connecting with any wires, and
still print by connecting the computer and printer via Bluetooth. The design
and graphics compared to the older printers is massive, there is no comparison
as simply because back a few years ago, they didn’t have the same technology
and equipment to do so, whereas now graphics are always at a high quality.
I personally believe that the printer has made a positive impact on the working class community, because in every business or in some homes there would be a printer. The newer printers simply makes life a whole lot easier and saves time, in a matter of a few clicks and seconds, the image or text that is on screen can easily be transferred onto a piece of paper in very high quality without any problems.
